Elly Pamatong lodges impeachment complaint vs Arroyo

MANILA, Philippines - Barely a week before her State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Wednesday found herself the subject of an impeachment complaint by a former nuisance presidential candidate. Radio dzBB's Rowena Salvacion reported that lawyer Elly Velez Pamatong brought his impeachment complaint against Arroyo to the office of the House of Representative secretary general. The five-page complaint accused Arroyo of violating her constitutional duties of integrity, responsibility and justice. It also cited "cheating" in the 2004 elections by talking to then elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano. President Arroyo acknowledged talking to Garcillano at the time and apologized for her lapse in judgement, but denied she cheated in the 2004 presidential race. In his impeachment complaint, Pamatong also cited Arroyo's alleged role in the controversial $329.48-million ZTE national broadband network deal mess. However, House Deputy Secretary General Marlou Jonathan Planos said that while the office received Pamatong's impeachment complaint, it is not considered filed as no member of the House sponsored it. - GMANews.TV
