21 areas under Signal 1 as 'Urduja' nears Leyte


At least 21 areas were placed under Storm Signal No. 1 as Tropical Depression Urduja moved closer to Leyte province Tuesday morning, state weather forecasters said. As of 4 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Urduja was in the vicinity of Dinagat or at 50 km east northeast of Maasin, Southern Leyte. "Visayas and Northeastern Mindanao will experience rains and gusty winds with moderate to rough seas. The rest of Mindanao will have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. Southern Luzon will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers. The rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers," it said in its 5 a.m. bulletin. The Japan Meteorological Agency's 6 p.m. Monday report said Urduja had maximum winds of 30 knots near the center and was "almost stationary." For its part, Pagasa said Urduja was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and was moving west northwest at 15 kph. It was expected to make landfall over Leyte Tuesday morning, and be 30 km west northwest of Roxas City Wednesday morning. By Thursday morning it is expected to be 180 km west northwest of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. By Friday morning it is expected to be 530 km west northwest of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. Areas under storm signal No. 1 include Masbate and Romblon in Luzon; Eastern Samar, Western Samar, Biliran, Leyte Provinces, Cebu, Camotes Island, Bohol, Negros Provinces, Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras in Visayas; Camiguin, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur Dinagat, and Siargao Island in Mindanao. Residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes in areas under storm signal No. 1 have been reminded to take all precautions against possible flash floods and landslides. - RSJ, GMANews.TV
